How the English Alphabet Works

Everything you need to know about letter counts, origins, phonetics, and order.

01. How Many Letters Are in the Alphabet?

The modern English alphabet contains exactly 26 letters: 5 vowels (A, E, I, O, U), 21 consonants, and 1 semi-vowel (Y). These 26 graphemes represent approximately 44 distinct sounds (phonemes) in spoken English.

02. Where Does the Word "Alphabet" Come From?

The word alphabet derives from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet: Alpha (Α, α) and Beta (Β, β), which in turn descended from the ancient Phoenician letters Aleph (ox) and Bet (house).

03. What Is the Middle Letter of the Alphabet?

Because 26 is an even number, there is no single middle letter. The exact center of the English alphabet is split between the 13th letter, M, and the 14th letter, N.

04. What Are the Most and Least Common Letters?

E is the most frequently used letter in the English language (accounting for ~12.7% of all letters), followed by T (9.1%) and A (8.2%). The rarest letters are Z (0.07%), Q (0.10%), and J (0.15%).
