How Word Counts & Reading Times Are Calculated
Formulas and algorithms powering our browser text analyzer.
Reading vs. Speaking Time
Silent reading averages 200–250 words per minute (WPM). Verbal speaking requires breaths and inflection, pacing at 130–150 WPM. We compute both in real time.
Typed Page Estimation
In standard academic formatting (Times New Roman, 12pt, double-spaced with 1-inch margins), one page contains roughly 250 words. Single-spaced formatting holds ~500 words.
100% In-Browser Privacy
Your draft articles, unpublished manuscripts, and confidential client copy are processed entirely in your web browser. Zero text is sent across network cables or stored on external databases.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers regarding word counting rules, punctuation, and character limits.
Do hyphenated words count as one word or two?
By default in standard English typography and word processors, hyphenated words (e.g. "state-of-the-art" or "well-known") are counted as a single word until separated by white space.
What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?
Characters with spaces counts every single keystroke including spaces, tabs, and line breaks. Characters without spaces isolates pure alphanumeric and punctuation glyphs, which publishers, translators, and academic institutions often use to benchmark document volume.
What are "Stop Words" in keyword density?
Stop words are ubiquitous grammatical connectors like the, a, is, to, of, and, in. Filtering them out reveals the substantive topical keywords in your text that matter for search engine ranking.
Is there any limit to how much text I can paste?
No! You can comfortably paste entire book chapters, theses, or 100,000-word manuscripts. Calculation takes only a few milliseconds directly in your browser.
